The Monroe Kennel Club has been sanctioned by the American Kennel Club since 1955. Since then we have been holding yearly dog shows and since 2002 we have been having two day shows. 2015’s show will be our 60th Anniversary and will be held at the Monroe County Fairgrounds.

Anna H. Whitney, who was a St. Bernard breeder and also the first woman judge in the USA and the first woman to judge at Westminster in 1888 ( Her first assignment was 117 Saint Bernards). Since Westminster was a men only club she was not invited to the judge's dinner but given a bouquet of roses instead. Judging at this show at the time was extremely political but she actually judged the dogs. One of the British dog papers reports on the show stated she was the "only" actual judge at the show.

Brace Showing was for years a popular attraction at Westminster. In the brace ring, two dogs from the same kennel are shown together to exhibit the consistent excellence of a breeding program. This William Gilbert win shot shows Grace Brewin with a pair of her “Petercrest”Lakeland Terriers, flanked by judge Anna Katherine Nicholas and Westminster show chairman Albert Van Court. Brace Showing has been discontinued at Westminster, but it is still offered at several shows around the country.

The sport of dogs has always attracted people with big, flamboyant personalities and few were as big and flamboyant as Lina Basquette. She was a former Ziegfeld Follies dancer and movie star, widow of Sam Warner (of Warner Brothers fame), and hugely successful breeder-handler-judge of Great Danes. Married nine times to seven husbands, and never shy about speaking her mind, Basquette is remembered fondly as one of the all-time characters of the show ring.

On June 28, 1859 -- a bright summer day in the United Kingdom -- a committee of local hunters held the world's first official dog show in the town of Newcastle upon Tyne. This show was limited to pointers and setters, but a second show held in November of that year in the town of Birmingham allowed spaniels. This second show, held in one of the galleries of the Horse and Carriage Repository, included around 80 dogs in 14 classes.
